Growing Without Losing What Makes Us Different
Manufacturing Lessons from Italy and the Future of Small-Batch Growth
This article is the first installment in our three-part series, From Italy to Back to Basics: Lessons from a Global Beauty Industry Journey. During our recent trip to Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna, we explored manufacturing innovation, ingredient sourcing, and emerging industry trends. Throughout this series, we'll share what we learned and how it may shape the future of Back to Basics Log Cabin.
At Back to Basics Log Cabin, growth has never been about becoming bigger for the sake of being bigger. It has always been about serving our customers better while preserving the quality and care that define our products.
That mindset recently took us to Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna in Italy, one of the largest beauty and cosmetic industry events in the world.
While much of the event focused on finished products and ingredient sourcing, I spent significant time exploring the manufacturing and production side of the industry through Cosmopack, the section dedicated to equipment, production systems, and manufacturing innovation.
I also attended educational sessions focused on manufacturing best practices, formulation stability, efficiency, and quality control. What stood out most was the industry's commitment to improving processes without compromising product integrity.
Across the show, there was a strong emphasis on Good Manufacturing Practices, consistency between batches, and maintaining quality as businesses grow.
That message resonated with me.
Back to Basics Log Cabin has always been a small-batch company. Our lotions are still whipped in smaller equipment, allowing us to maintain greater control over texture, freshness, and ingredient integrity. That hands-on approach is one of the reasons our customers love our products.
At the same time, growing demand means we must continue finding ways to improve efficiency and maintain inventory without sacrificing quality.
One of the biggest takeaways from Italy was that growth does not have to mean mass production.
There is a middle ground where a company can improve consistency, streamline production, and increase capacity while still maintaining the small-batch philosophy that makes its products unique.
As we continue to grow, we plan to invest in improved equipment that supports this balance. Our goal is not to produce more products at the expense of quality. Our goal is to create the same products our customers trust with even greater consistency and reliability.
Unlike many of the ingredients we use, which are sourced globally based on climate and growing conditions, our manufacturing equipment will continue to be sourced within the United States whenever possible. We believe American manufacturers lead the world in safety standards, reliability, and production quality, and we are proud to support them.
The trip to Italy reinforced something we have believed from the beginning:
Quality isn't just about what goes into a product. It's also about how that product is made.
As Back to Basics continues to grow, our commitment remains the same: thoughtful production, intentional growth, and products made with care.
While manufacturing and production are important, great products begin even earlier, with the ingredients themselves.
In Part 2, we'll share why we traveled halfway around the world to connect directly with growers, distillers, and ingredient producers, and how those relationships may help us continue delivering the quality our customers expect.
