Omega-3’s Benefits

Omega 3 Benefits

Omega 3 benefits have always been available to us, it is todays diet that is rich in salt additives, bleaching and the addition of chemicals that has had an effect on the North American populations health and weight. In the 19th century farmers would have eaten what was fresh for the day and what was in season, reaping the benefits of all the nutrients that were still viable (each day your food items lose nutritional value). The grains were whole, the fruit fresh picked, the chicken newly butchered, the fish fresh caught. Today we dont consume enough fresh fish in our diets, or enough whole grains that are fresh in order to gain our Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Did you know Heart Disease is the #1 killer for men and women? This used to be a disease that was very uncommon, and happened to “older” people. Now it is not unheard of for someone in their early 40’s to have been diagnosed with this disease. In fact, there are so many customers coming into our store asking for help with Heart Disease, high blood pressure, Diabetes and arthritis to name a few.
Research studies are published almost weekly where the scientific community discovers more and more amazing omega 3 benefits.

Here are seven benefits that Medline Plus says are possible from omega 3:

1. Freedom from pain and inflammation. The National Institute of Health’s website, Medline Plus says, “Omega-3 fatty acids reduce pain and swelling.” How? Omega 3 fish oil fatty acids, particularly EPA, are involved in your body’s inflammatory response and inflammation cycle. Relieving the inflammation (swelling) will help reduce the pain.

2. Better brain function and higher intelligence. Pregnant and nursing mothers who include omega 3 fatty acids in their diets, may have a positive impact on their babies intelligence. For adults, fish oil is also being researched in association with improved memory, recall, reasoning and focus.

3. Feeling better with much less depression. Making you smarter is not all that fish oil may do for your brain. Psychiatry department researchers at the University of Sheffield UK, along with other research studies, have seen the possibility that the omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil supplements “alleviated” the symptoms of depression, bipolar and psychosis. [Journal of Affective Disorder Vol. 48(2-3);149-55]

4. Lower incidence of childhood disorders. Just to show how fish oil fatty acids leave nobody out, studies suggest that children (and adults) with ADD and ADHD may experience a greatly improved quality of life. From Medline Plus, “Taking fish oil seems to improve thinking skills and behavior in 8 to 12 year-old children with ADHD.”

5. Superior cardiovascular health. Research has suggested that the DHA, EPA and DPA in fish oil may have a positive effect on heart disease. According to Medline Plus, “Fish oil may be effective in keeping people with healthy hearts free of heart disease. People who already have heart disease may be able to lower their risk of dying from heart disease by taking fish oil. Though not all researchers agree, some investigators believe that fish oil may be even more effective in reducing death from heart attacks than a group of commonly used cholesterol-lowering drugs called “statins.”

6. Protection from heart attack and stroke. When plaque builds up on arterial walls and then breaks loose, it causes what’s known as a thrombosis, which is a fancy way of saying clot. If a clot gets stuck in the brain, it causes a stroke and when it plugs an artery, it causes a heart attack. From Medline Plus: “Moderate fish consumption (once or twice a week) seems to lower the risk of having a stroke by as much as 27%.”

7. Reduction of menstrual pain. And finally, it seem that fish oil may have a positive effect on the discomfort associated with menstrual pain or dysmenorrheal. According to Medline Plus: “Taking fish oil alone or in combination with vitamin B12 seems to improve painful periods and reduce the need for pain medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).” That should be reason enough for every woman to include omega 3 fish oil in her daily routine!
We are now offering a variety of healthy oils for your body, including Flaxseed, Grapeseed and Coconut Oil. We order directly from a wholesale supplier and order only what we will need for a short term basis, ensuring the product is fresh and you gain the most benefit.

Ok, here is my latest rant, forgive any spelling errors as I am eating my lunch, typing and in between customers and picking up my kids from school:)

The antibiotics that have been handed to us over the years are now becoming resistant to E Coli, H1N1, Staph Infection to name a few….the list is ever-growing.  There are all different side effects to the antibiotic….diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and upset stomach, they  can cause immediate and delayed allergic reactions – specifically, skin rashes, fever, and anaphylactic shock, affect the central nervous system (headache, confusion and dizziness), phototoxicity…you get the idea.  If you are a woman, you will most likely end up with a yeast infection (not listed as a side effect?hmmm), where you will need to take yet another pill to “treat” that.  Why do ladies get yeast infections?  Because we are killing all the good bacteria that is in our system (By the way eating yogurt can help solve that problem when it contains natural cultures such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, also we sell Best Defense Salve that works great in conjunction with the yogurt).

Antibiotics are expensive and have become more resistant the more Doctors have prescribed them.  Today Doctors have realized the down side of prescribing too many antibiotics, they don’t work on viral infections either, they cost a lot of money and the side effects…..that brings me to the title of this little article…Antibiotics~WHY????

Because many people don’t know there are natural herbs that will prevent illness such as Echinacea, Astragalus & Wild Oregano.  By boosting your immune system you not only help prevent the colds and flu from attacking you, but help prevent more serious illness’ like cancer.  Keeping your immune system healthy is obviously very important, but in today’s world we race against the clock, don’t eat properly (lets not go on about corn syrup), don’t exercise enough (because we aren’t getting enough nutrition from our foods…and did I mention corn syrup?) we aren’t sleeping well (because our backs ache, our joints hurt…..and corn syrup).  These all directly affect our immune system and when it is compromised, that is when illness kicks in.

There is a very simple method of avoiding Antibiotics.  Its called Oregano Oil.  A few drops a day are all you need to work as a preventative medicine.  Or you can take it when sick or if you see an outbreak of illness.  Wild Oregano has been studied and shows it can kill the H1N1 Virus, Staph Virus (Staphylococcus aureus) as well as E Coli. There are no side effects and it is safe for children as well as adults. I think my next article should be on Corn Syrup:)  Until then, here are some facts about Oregano Oil:

Oregano Oil Properties:

Immune Stimulant

As an immune system booster, oregano is unparalleled in the plant kingdom. It is many times stronger than Echinacea or golden seal.  A couple of drops daily are enough to supercharge your system, which is your first and most powerful defense against disease.

Antibiotic and Antiseptic

Tooth and gum infections respond quickly to Oregano Oil, due to its powerful antibacterial and antiseptic properties. The oil is applied directly to the gums. A drop of Oregano Oil on your tooth-brush will leave you mouth feeling fresh and clean.

Food Poisoning

In a recent study, approximately 20 percent of meat samples obtained from grocery stores contained antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Vegetarians can be affected by food poisoning, as well. Salmonella and E. coli have been found on such vegetables as iceberg lettuce and alfalfa sprouts, resulting in food poisoning.  Restaurant food is often contaminated due to poor hygiene or improper washing of produce. By using oregano oil daily, you can significantly reduce your chances of being one of the 84 million cases of food poisoning that occur annually in North America.

Oregano oil has been used very successfully in treating viral conditions, such as colds, flu, shingles, herpes and warts.  The fact that wild oregano oil can stop a cold or flu if taken at the first sign of symptoms is indicative of its amazing powers.

The aggressive antifungal properties of oregano oil work effectively against stubborn fungal infections such as candida and nail fungus. You may use the oregano oil internally for candida and both externally and internally for nail fungus. Mix a few drops with shampoo to get rid of dandruff , which are caused by fungal infection of the scalp. Take some to the locker  room to eradicate athlete’s foot.

Allergies, which are affecting increasing numbers of people,   can often be eliminated by the internal use of oregano oil and  by breathing the vapors from the oil. In many cases relief occurs  quickly.

Among the natural antioxidants, oregano oil is one of the most  powerful. It protects cells from free radical damage and in the same way it prolongs the shelf life of foods.

Parasites, such as head lice and scabies, as well as internal parasites, are no match for oregano oil. The oil can be added to soaps, shampoos and diluted in olive oil for topical applications.  By taking a few drops daily under the tongue, one can gain protection from water-borne parasites.

Blood Oxygen Levels

Many people suffer symptoms related to poor oxygen absorption in the blood. Their cells are starved for oxygen feel the effects  as fatigue. Oregano oil used internally and externally increases oxygen absorption in the blood. Many people note increased energy after taking oregano oil.

You can purchase the Best Defense Salve, Oil of Oregano and many other natural Herbs and natural body care items here, or at our store Back to Basics Log Cabin.

Chemotherapy~what to do afterwards

Mouth sores are one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy or radiation therapy of the head and neck area. Known to doctors as mucositis, they can actually occur anywhere in the mouth or throat and develop when the ultrasensitive tissue that lines the mouth and throat becomes inflamed.
Here are some tidbits that may help alleviate some of the side effects:
While having chemo: chew on ice chips as this helps prevent blood flow to the mouth, therefore preventing the chemicals from saturating the cells in that area.

Purchase a soft bristle brush and rinse in warm water before brushing.

Make a mouth wash that will keep yeast/fungal/bacterial infections at bay:
1/2 tsp baking soda in 8oz water and add 3-4 drops tea tree essential oil
(note: mouth washes that contain alcohol will further irritate these sores)
rinse your mouth with this solution 3 or 4 times a day.
Back to Basics Log Cabin sells Tea Tree Essential Oil for $7.99/.5oz
or you can purchase it at many pharmacies.

Drink plenty of water

Chemo patients are advised not to drink tea or coffee, however they are referring to the caffine in the tea. Most Herbal teas are caffine free.
An herbal tea of:
Chamomile, peppermint, lemon, lavender, corriander will be made available soon at Back to Basics Log Cabin. The chamomile cleanses and helps heal the sores, the mint helps with digestion and stomach upset as well provides anticeptic properties, lemon encourages salivation, Lavender is a mild analgesic (pain reliever) and Corriander is a digestive aid.

Use Chapstick (not vaseline)
Back to Basics Log Cabin will be making a chapstick that contains Tea Tree and Peppermint Essential Oils to help keep the sores from developing around the mouth. But you can use any chapstick/lubricant to keep lips moistened.

Another side effect that can occur is vaginal/rectal sores that can become infected, the recommendation is to use baby wipes or personal wipes after each and every urination/bowl movement, However; they contain alcohol, which we already know can irritate things further. What you want is to keep the urine and fecal matter from the sores so they do not become infected. Our Best Defense Salve is a great way to protect the skin, allow the sores to breath and still have a barrier in place that will help the skin heal and kill any bacteria at the same time.

Help yourself to raw Honey. Honey is naturally healing and will kill bacteria in the mouth, it tastes great and helps internally in a variety of ways. A teaspoon at night aids in a good nights sleep and is a natural humectant~drawing moisture to it.

Essential Oils for Life…

I have been amazed with my experiences so far in dealing with Essential Oils.  Did you know that most medicines are based off of the healing attributes of plants?  Essential oils have been used for centuries to treat ailments, from bee stings to liver problems. Hippocrates the father of medicine stated “the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage everyday”.  Since most essential oils have antiviral, antiseptic, antifungal or anti-inflammatory characteristics, this is good advice.  Massage helps with circulation which increases your bodies immune system, and any germs floating around would be disinfected without the use of harmful chemicals.  A bath not only helps in relaxation, which is especially useful in today’s society with all the demands we put upon ourselves, but you benefit from aromatherapy in different ways depending on which oils you use.

Today I want to focus on two particular essential oils, Lavender & Lemongrass.  Most people have heard of Lavender.  This oil is gentle enough for babies and is useful to aid in relaxation.  I personally have found the oil indispensable.  When we get a mosquito bite, I place a single drop of lavender oil on the bite and its anti-inflammatory action takes the itch and swelling away immediately!  Since it is also a natural bug deterrent, you will benefit from the scent keeping those pests away and smell nice while doing it!  From what I have seen so far, this summer is going to be a bad one for bugs, whether they are ants, mosquitoes or spiders.  Since my son is allergic to mosquitoes, I have created a soap that contains Lemongrass and Lavender essential oils.  This is an amazing combination, Citronella-one of the most popular bug fighting oils-is obtained from the Lemongrass plant.  Therefore the combination of having these two oils in a soap that contains no “perfumes” gives you a fighting chance against the beasts.

Lemongrass essential oil properties include antiseptic, analgesic (pain reliever), antifungal, antimicrobial and even antidepressant effects. So every time you use these essential oils and follow-up with the lotion stick we have created to compliment the soap, you are providing a natural barrier between yourself and germs, a scent barrier between you and bugs all added with a pleasant scent and moisturizing qualities for your skin.  Both of these products will be available in our store when we open this June and they are also available on our etsy page:

Signed,  Amanda

Environmental tip for the day:

If any of you have children in school, you will notice that you get an abundance of paperwork each and every day in your childs backpack.  Even though schools are having hard economic times and in the case of our school system; cutting bus transportation for our highschool students in order to save money, we still get sent between 5 and 20 sheets of paper each day.  Since I have worked with the school photocopiers, I know the duplex option is next to impossible to work, so I am suggesting that we re-use the papers that are sent home.  I have created pads of paper to take notes from, made booklets for my kids to make story books from and I have started to look into a shredder in order to try packaging some of our all natural baskets and crates with “recycled” materials.

Do you have any great ideas to recycle some of your waste paper coming into your home?  If so, please Blog with us!

Welcome to our Home!!

Back To Basics Log Cabin is a company that was started by Randy and Amanda who live in rural Southern Ohio.  Randy is a beekeeper who believes in all natural treatment of honey bees and Amanda (me) is an herbalist who makes an all natural skin care line that utilizes natural ingredients as well as natural preservatives, over chemical ones.

Our company resides in an old style log cabin that Randy built on his own, its character and charm have people driving from miles around to look at it.  Our store hasn’t opened yet, however our Market Stand that started this endeavor is open every day unless the weather is too severe to keep the awning from blowing away!  This stand is a self-serve stand with an honor box and you would be surprised at how many honest people we have in our community!!  Once we open our store, we plan on housing local artisans as well as our honey and skin care line.  From local pottery, hand-made wood toys, soy candles and hand-made aprons are just a few I will mention.

Many of our favorite customers have been hearing that our store “will be open soon”, but this time we mean it!  Haha, construction takes time and money, the children need attention and exercise and the rain has kept us from completing this project on time. Our fingers are crossed for an early June opening.  There is so much to tell you about that I will have to post different topics to cover everything.  From our collaboration with a wonderful Professor from Marietta College that has been working with us on Graphic Design, the SARE grant we were awarded by the Department of Agriculture, or the farmers market we would like to set up in order to make fresh local fruits and veggies available.

Once we get a little more organized I plan to include healthy living tips on herbs, essential oils, whole grains, beauty treatments, unique gift ideas and honey of course!  I do a lot of research on different topics and I plan on sharing the most interesting points with you!

Here is a small sample of our handmade items we make at Back To Basics Log Cabin, its our online store and has been a lot of fun to create!  Enjoy:)

If you have a question about our honey, our store or a skin care problem you need help in solving, please post on this site and I will try to get back to you asap.   Thanks for reading!
