Lessons from a Global Beauty Industry Journey
What would inspire a small-town, family-owned business to travel thousands of miles to Italy? For us, the answer is simple. To learn.
At Back to Basics Log Cabin, we've always believed that if we're asking our customers to trust the products we create, it's our responsibility to continually improve the knowledge, processes, and ingredients behind them.
But this journey actually began long before we boarded a plane.
It began with questions.
Questions about the ingredients in the products we use. Questions about where our own ingredients came from. Questions about rising costs and changing supply chains. And, ultimately, a bigger question: Could we do things even better?
That curiosity eventually took us across the Atlantic to Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna, one of the world's leading beauty and cosmetic industry events.
This wasn't simply a trip to attend a trade show. It was an investment in the future of Back to Basics and, more importantly, an investment in the products and experience we provide to our customers.
We met with growers, distillers, ingredient producers, manufacturers, packaging suppliers, and industry professionals from around the globe. We explored emerging trends, studied manufacturing practices, attended educational sessions, discovered new ingredients, and asked a lot of questions.
Why? Because we believe there is always room to learn.
As a small-batch company, we're proud of what makes us different. We formulate intentionally, choose ingredients carefully, and make products with the same level of care we would expect for our own families.
Staying true to those values doesn't mean standing still. It means continually looking deeper, learning more, and finding better ways to do what we've always done.
Throughout this four-part series, we're sharing that journey—from the questions that started it all to the discoveries that are helping shape what comes next for Back to Basics Log Cabin.
Part 1: Looking Beyond the Label
Where the questions began.
Before there was a trip to Italy, there was a growing curiosity about what was really inside the products we use. Discover how questioning labels, researching ingredients, and listening to our customers helped shape Back to Basics—and ultimately inspired us to look deeper into where our own ingredients come from.
Part 2: It All Begins with the Ingredients
Taking our search directly to the source.
Travel with us to Italy and beyond as we meet growers, distillers, manufacturers, and family-owned producers—and discover why knowing the people and processes behind an ingredient can make all the difference. (publishes 09/22/26)
Part 3: Protecting What We've Sourced
Exceptional ingredients deserve exceptional care.
Finding high-quality ingredients is only half the story. Learn how we're applying what we discovered about manufacturing, equipment, Good Manufacturing Practices, and production efficiency to protect ingredient integrity while thoughtfully growing our small-batch operation. (publishes 10/06/26)
Part 4: Where Curiosity Leads Next
The journey didn't end in Italy.
New relationships. New ingredients. New ideas. And even more questions. See how our experiences are opening doors to future products, global partnerships, and new opportunities to bring you along as we continue learning and discovering. (publishes 10/20/26)
Why This Matters
Every decision we make ultimately comes back to one question:
How does this make things better for our customers?
Whether it's understanding what's really behind an ingredient, building relationships directly with trusted producers, improving the way we manufacture our products, or exploring what's next, our goal remains the same: to create products you can feel good about using and an experience built on knowledge, transparency, and trust.
We know there are easier ways to run a business than traveling across the world, asking endless questions, researching ingredients, learning new processes, and building relationships one conversation at a time.
But that's never been who we are.
We're committed to doing the research, investing in education, and continually seeking better ways to serve you because we believe that's what you deserve.
And this journey is far from over.

We didn't travel to Italy to become a different company.
