Protecting What We've Sourced
In Part 1, I shared how questioning ingredient labels changed the way I looked at every product I purchased.
In Part 2, I took you behind the scenes of how Back to Basics Log Cabin searches for exceptional ingredients by building relationships with growers, distillers, and producers around the world.
But finding outstanding ingredients is only part of the journey.
Once those ingredients arrive at Back to Basics Log Cabin, my responsibility shifts from finding them to protecting them.
I believe the quality of a product isn't determined by sourcing alone. It's protected through every step of the manufacturing process—from how ingredients are stored, to the temperatures they're exposed to, when they're added to a formulation, how they're blended together, and the care that's taken with every single batch.
Manufacturing isn't just about following a recipe.
It's about understanding the ingredients.
Some botanical extracts are sensitive to heat. Certain essential oils can lose delicate aromatic compounds if they're exposed to excessive temperatures. Other ingredients perform best when they're added during a very specific stage of production. Every botanical, oil, butter, and herbal extract has unique characteristics, and respecting those differences is one of the most important parts of creating a quality product.
That's why I believe manufacturing is just as important as sourcing.
One of the most valuable experiences during our trip to Italy wasn't just meeting suppliers. It was spending time learning about the manufacturing side of our industry.
Through Cosmopack, I explored manufacturing equipment, production systems, automation, and attended educational sessions covering formulation stability, production efficiency, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), quality control, and batch consistency.
One message stood out above everything else:
Growth should never come at the expense of quality.
That philosophy couldn't have aligned more closely with what I've always believed.
As more people discovered Back to Basics Log Cabin, I found myself facing a wonderful problem. I simply couldn't keep up with the demand using the same equipment that had served us well for years.
For me, the answer was never mass production.
The answer was investing in better equipment that would allow me to continue making the same handcrafted products you've come to trust—only with greater consistency, improved efficiency, and an even higher level of cleanliness.
This became even more important because I intentionally formulate many of our products with minimal natural preservatives and avoid unnecessary chemical preservatives whenever possible.
That means every improvement in our manufacturing process matters.
Cleaner equipment. Better production flow. More precise mixing. Reduced product exposure during filling. Improved sanitation.
Each improvement helps protect the integrity of the ingredients we've worked so hard to source while creating a cleaner, more controlled manufacturing environment.
The goal isn't to make products faster.
The goal is to make them better.
Better equipment doesn't replace craftsmanship. It allows me to spend less time fighting production bottlenecks and more time researching new ingredients, improving formulations, and creating products I feel proud to place in your hands.
I want every ingredient to arrive at your home with the same integrity it had when it left the farm, the distillery, or the manufacturer. Then it's my job to make sure those ingredients work together in harmony, allowing each one to fulfill the purpose it was chosen for. That's when a collection of quality ingredients becomes a truly exceptional product.
At Back to Basics Log Cabin, manufacturing isn't simply the step where ingredients become a finished product. It's where everything we've learned—from questioning labels, to searching the world for exceptional ingredients, to understanding how they're produced—comes together.
Every improvement we make, every piece of equipment we invest in, and every refinement to our process has one purpose: to better protect the integrity of the ingredients we've worked so hard to source.
