It All Begins with the Ingredients
Back to Basics Log Cabin has never grown simply for the sake of becoming bigger. Every step we've taken has been driven by one goal: serving our customers better while preserving the quality, simplicity, and care that define every product we make.
In Part 1, I shared how rising costs and changing supplier relationships forced me to ask a difficult question:
Were we truly using the best ingredients available, or had we simply become comfortable buying from the same sources for the past 15 years?
To answer that question, I knew I had to go beyond supplier catalogs and distributor websites. I needed to meet the people behind the ingredients.
That decision led Randy and me to Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna, one of the world's leading exhibitions for beauty, wellness, skincare, cosmetic manufacturing, and ingredient sourcing.
This wasn't a sightseeing trip. It was an opportunity to connect directly with the companies that grow the herbs, distill the essential oils, press the plant oils, manufacture cosmetic ingredients, and develop the raw materials that eventually become part of the products we create at Back to Basics Log Cabin.
For years, we had purchased quality ingredients through trusted distributors. While those relationships served us well, we realized that every additional company between us and the original producer added another layer between us and the source.
Meeting manufacturers face-to-face changed everything.
Instead of relying on product descriptions in a catalog, we could ask questions that really mattered:
• Where are your herbs grown?
• How are your essential oils distilled?
• What makes your ingredient different from another supplier's?
• What quality testing do you perform?
• Can you trace your ingredients back to their origin?
• How do you protect quality from harvest to shipment?
Those conversations gave us insights that simply aren't available through a distributor. We were able to compare scent profiles, learn how growing regions affect ingredient quality, understand different extraction methods, review documentation, and gain a much deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind exceptional ingredients.
The experience also introduced us to a completely new way of sourcing. Rather than purchasing through third- or even fourth-party distributors, we began building relationships directly with producers around the world. That meant learning an entirely new side of business—international trade regulations, import documentation, customs requirements, tariffs, overseas shipping, and the challenges of bringing ingredients safely from one country to another.
It wasn't always easy, but it gave us something far more valuable than convenience.
It gave us confidence.
Our travels have also taken us far beyond trade shows. We've visited centuries-old apothecaries in Florence, explored olive farms in Italy, learned about sea moss along Ireland's coast, discovered traditional herbal practices throughout Europe, and met family-owned producers whose names and reputations are attached to every bottle they create.
One lesson became clear.
The finest ingredients don't always come from the largest manufacturers. Many come from smaller producers who have spent generations perfecting their craft and take tremendous pride in every harvest, every distillation, and every shipment they send.
Today, many of our ingredients are sourced through relationships we've built personally. We know the people behind them, understand their production methods, and continue searching for exceptional ingredients that reflect the quality our customers have come to expect.
Because quality doesn't begin when we make a product.
It begins long before an ingredient ever reaches Back to Basics Log Cabin.
But finding exceptional ingredients is only half of the story.
